The Originator

We take for granted that almost all musical recordings are packaged with some sort of visual artwork. That wasn't always the case. Back in 1938, art director and designer Alex Steinweiss invented the album cover—much more attractive than the previous brown wrappers. In a Dwell interview, he said "Just plain design didn't mean a damn thing. You had to know the music." Steinweiss recently passed but his legacy lives on. via The New York Times
